itch.io alternatives for adult game developers

itch.io used to be the easy answer. Since July 2025 it isn't. Here's where adult devs sell now, and how to combine channels so one policy change can't sink you.

Updated October 22, 2026 · DuskPlay

Short version: no single platform replaces what itch.io was. The setup that works now: Patreon or SubscribeStar for development income, one or two stores that sell adult games openly for one-time sales, and your own email list. Keep itch.io too if your game is still visible there, just don't depend on it.

What changed on itch.io

In July 2025, under pressure on payment processors, itch.io removed adult content from browse and search. Free adult games came back first; paid ones returned slowly and with more restrictions. For many devs, the main problem wasn't the rules, it was losing discovery overnight. Full timeline.

A setup that survives the next policy change

  1. Development income: Patreon and SubscribeStar side by side, so patrons can move if one changes its rules. Compare them.
  2. One-time sales: at least two stores that welcome adult games, so a single delisting doesn't stop sales.
  3. Your audience: an email list or Discord server you own. Ask for it in your game's menu and every release post.
  4. Discovery: X, Reddit and stores with curated collections. Marketing guide.

FAQ

Can I still sell adult games on itch.io?

Some adult games are visible and sold again, but discovery is limited and rules are stricter than before July 2025. Treat it as one channel among several.

What is the best alternative to itch.io for adult games?

There isn't one replacement. Most developers combine Patreon or SubscribeStar for ongoing income with one or more adult-friendly stores for one-time sales.

Should I sell on my own website?

It gives the best margin, but you need an adult-friendly payment processor or crypto checkout, and your own traffic. It works best alongside stores, not instead of them.
